Art Therapy

What is Art therapy?

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of expression and communication. Within this context, art is not used as diagnostic tool but as a medium to address emotional issues which may be confusing and distressing. Art Psychotherapy can help an individual to express thoughts and feelings which may be too difficult to verbalise and to help make meaning of past and present experiences.

Art Psychotherapy is not a recreational activity or an art lesson, although the sessions can be enjoyable. Clients do not need to have any previous experience or expertise in art.

Art Psychotherapists are professionals trained in both art and therapy. Although influenced by psychoanalysis, Art Psychotherapists have been inspired by theories such as attachment-based psychotherapy and have developed a broad range of client-centred approaches such as psycho-educational, mindfulness and mentalisation-based treatments, compassion-focussed and cognitive analytic therapies.

Typical session

Treatment sessions tend to follow the following process. The amount of time spent on each stage depends on you and your needs. Each session lasts 50 minutes.

Stage One - pre-art making check in and a discussion if appropriate.

Stage Two - artmaking. A range of art materials is provided. I am trained to teach you to use these if required. You can choose an open or specific theme, ie. anger. The process can be directed my me or non-directive depending on your preference.

Stage Three - A reflection and discussion with psychoeducation provided if appropriate.

I am there to provide a safe space, share any observations, and reflect with if you wish to do so.

Appointments are available with Stephanie on Wednesdays.
